A tough fight at a 2nd alarm fire on a narrow Lane street of Lowell.
“Deputy, we’re gone to have something, there’s heavy smoke up!” Engine 7 reported as they rushed with light and sirens towards #58 Lane St., the address given by dispatch for a possible structure fire.
Once on scene they made entry to found heavy fire on the upper floors. “We’ve made entry, we’re waiting on water on the 2nd floor!”
The radios at this point began to busy none stop with communication back and forth from interior crews to command. “We could use some venting!”, “Ok, I’m gone to have ladder2 vent the roof!” “The fire is in the walls!” with the exception of the opening quote, these are all paraphrases of what the radio traffic sounded like.
With the radios hopping it was not long before command called fire alarm to request an additional pump to the scene.
The radios where still a buzz, “There’s fire below us, command you need guys on the 1st floor with water!” “There’s fire in the basement, looks like it climb the walls!”
“Fire alarm, give me a 2nd alarm!” came across the radio! That is when you know the guys were struggling to knock down the fire.
With an additional ladder responding, command got on the radio and instructed them how to respond in order for them to be positioned were he needed them the most on the Charley side of the building, because that was where the bulk of the fire was.
Crews battled this tough fire for several hours, ripping the walls open finding hot spot. Taking the K-12 to the roof, finding fire hiding between roof layers. Once the fire was knocked down enough command began to release the 2nd alarm companies to return to cover the city, while the 1st alarm crews continued to wet the building down. As the day grew long and the guys wore down, the trucks moaned for gas command began to swap out trucks and crews.
A tough battle fought well, by Lowell fire department.
