It was a serious one!
A serious single vehicle MVA shut down Route 495 Northbound on Wednesday May 15th, 2019.
Just as the traffic on the highway began to get heavy so did the phone lines in the Andover 911 center. They began receiving multiple calls reporting an accident on 495. The all tone hit the airwaves and the dispatcher rattled off the response.
With reports of possible entrapment it got the full response, "Engine 1, Engine 3, Ladder 1, A 1 & A 3 with Car 2 respond..." Even with the heavy traffic companies arrived quickly. Car 2 arrived and reported he had a single vehicle rollover wedged against a tree in the medium with heavy entrapment.
As crews where rolling up Car 2 was rattling off his orders. "I want stabilizing equipment..." "Get the JAWS out..."
Although he had a conscious and alert patient he made the call, "Fire Alarm start MedFlight"
Crews fought with controlled chaos to free the person. Stabilizing the vehicle with poles and a wrecker from Cody's Town firefighters worked on the vehicle to make several cuts using the JAWS. Once crews had access to the patient they began to stabilize him with a collar and short board, before more cuts where made on the vehicle.
With the highway shutdown Boston MedFlight 3 made the hop from Lawrence airport over to the scene, putting wheels down just north of the scene on the highway. The flight crews grabbed their gear and walked up to the scene.
After what probably seemed like an eternity to the patient crews cut enough of the vehicle away from him that they where able to remove him.
And with that it came to an end. Command radioed in reporting the patient was freed and MedFlight was off the ground and companies where clearing.
