Melrose 2nd alarm on Willow Street
As much as I know some of you hate when I use catchy slogans I am about to do it anyways! Two up and 2 down in the round. Melrose fire struck a 2nd alarm fire yesterday which caused serious damage to two home on Willow Street and sent two fire fighters to the hospital with injuries. Hence the two and two, two homes, two fire fighters.
The first arriving unit to Willow Street which is just blocks away from the Central Station in Melrose found heavy fire blowing out the second floor window of a 2 story wood residential on the Bravo side. The fire was blowing out the window so much it extended to the structure on the Delta side melting the siding off; but; crews where able to quickly stop the fire from finding its way inside that home.
With the fire knocked down on the exposure building crews attempted to make a push into the 2nd floor of the main fire building; but; according to the Chief the fire was to heavy and crews could not make it in without knocking back the bulk of the fire from the outside.
The Chief said he called in an extra ladder company which helped ventilate the structure helping the crews to make that push into the interior. Once they got inside they had their fair share of chasing the hot spots as the fire had found its way up into the cock loft and was crawling around under the roof.
As I said in my opening two fire fighters where taking to the nearby Melrose-Wakefield Hospital as a precaution after suffering none-life threatening injuries.
