No ball being played this night!
Most of the time Veterans Field on the corner of North Ave., and Church St. in Wakefield is used to play softball; but; sometime it is used for something a lot more serious like landing a MedFlight helicopter on.
Just after dinner time on Sat. June 13th a crowd gather around and it wasn't to see a grand slam, the crowd gather at the sounds and sights of a Boston MedFlight helicopter coming in for a landing on the field to transport a patient with serious injuries as a result of an incident in the area of Lowell St.
Wakefield fire and police 1st responded to a location in the area of Lowell St. where the patient was located with serious injuries. EMT's from Cataldo ambulance began treating the patient and determined that the severity of the injuries warranted the patient being transported to a trauma center in Boston and the fast way there was to call for Boston MedFlight.
Crew responded to Vet's field; as it is commonly known as; and blocked off the parking lot and cleared the fenced in area of the field out of anyone who was out enjoying the sunny day.
First the sounds of sirens filled the air as crews raced across the town to Vet's which was now a landing zone or LZ for the helicopter. Next came the load swishing sounds of the rotors blades of the helicopter as it approached.
"MedFlight to LZ command!" came across the radio, followed by a bunch of back and forth between the boots on the ground for Wakefield Fire and the Helicopter to make sure the LZ was secure and safe to land. There was also chit chatter about age, weight, and condition of the patient.
And before you could blink an eye the helicopter was slowly hovering making its way down to the ground. Once on the ground the flight medic gathered their gear and made their way over to the back of the ambulance where they triaged they patient transferred them onto the stretcher from the helicopter before wheeling them over to the calm shell doors on the back and loaded them in.
Doors buttoned up flight crew on board there is only on part left to tell. The pilot turned on the aircraft's lights ramped up the engines slowly lifting the helicopter off the ground into the air and on its way to the trauma center.
