Late in the evening on Tuesday the Tewksbury fire department received reports of heavy smoke coming from the area behind the Home Depot at Rt. 38 and Rt. 495.
Crews responded and after an investigation it was determined that the fire was closer to the rear of the Walmart, so crews responded up to that area to access the fire a long an old railroad bed. Crews were unable to fit a full size pumper down into the area, so they walked in with water cans and hand tools to begin to fight the fire, while other crews were responding to station 2 near the Wilmington line to retrieve engine 7 a smaller brush truck.
Once engine 7 was on scene, cre
ws carefully maneuvered it through the narrow gate and path going about 150 yards into the woods to supply the much needed water to contain this fire and stop it from spreading with the wind, which it was doing.
Engine 7 had to make a couple trip out of the woods to a pumper at a hydrant to refill its tank then returning back to the crews in the woods.
Crews chased several hot spots well into the dark of the night using the light from engine 7 and flashlights.
While on scene crews where provided rehab services; of water and Gatorades drinks; by Merrimack Valley Relief.
