Lynn's 5 alarm fire on New Year's day


Just after 7:30 a.m. on New Years Day Lynn Fire received calls for and responded to a reported building fire at 22 W Baltimore Street. Companies reported smoke showing on arrival from a 5 Story Brick apartment building and a Working Fire assignment was transmitted. Around 8:00 a.m. 2nd alarm was sound and the 3rd alarms was struck shortly after as the fire had extended throughout the upper floors. Around 8:30 a.m. the 4th & 5th alarms were struck as fire took a hold of the top floors and cock loft and roof as it traveled pipe chases and elevator shafts. All companies evacuated the building and began the surround and drown battle of the blaze from master streams and 4 ladder pipes. The fire took several hours to knockdown. 2 Firefighters suffered minor injuries. 65 residents were displaced. Mutual aid was provided by Revere, Saugus, Winthrop, Boston, Malden, Peabody, Salem, Swampscott, Chelsea & Marblehead Fire departments. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
