Earlier yesterday morning Lowell’s 911 center began to buzz with phone calls report a structure fire at 57 Parker Street.
With their senior guy on comms; Stephen Paris; the tones dropped and the radio came alive with the dispatch of the 1st alarm assignment.
As the 1st Due Crew pulled up the update came in, “We have heavy fire and smoke showing!” The Deputy quickly called the working fire assignment and Steve dispatched out the RIT engine.
Within minutes though the Deputy got on scene and realized this is gone to be more than just a working fire and called the board, “Fire alarm give me a 2nd alarm!”
Crews struggled to make entry with heavy fire conditions throughout. And with the 1st Due Crew running out of water before a feeder could established.
It was about now; just as the tones dropped for the 2nd alarm and those units began to sign on; that bad became worst! The words “We have reports of a missing child, still inside” came across the radios. The rescue crew made the push and searched the building. Everyone holding their breath in the cold morning air. They came rushing out the front door, calling for the medic, “We got him, we need medic, we need medic!”
With hand lines in hand crews began the push deeper and deeper into this large multi family home. But at every turn they found themselves facing a new obstacle, “Deputy the stairs on the … side have burnt through, but we’re ok!”
“Command to Fire Alarm, 3rd alarm” came across the radio! The streets in the area where filled with hose and trucks pumping water making the area slippery with ice and hard to work.
The fire took several hours to knock down and several more to put out hot spots. Both Lowell’s arson investigation unit and State fire marshal where called to the scene.
The State Department of Fire Services Rehab unit was also called to the scene to provide a warming stations for the Firefighters to warm up in and get a hot drink and food.
Unfortunately the child who was brought out of the building; following the amazing hard work of the Rescue crew; did not make it and passed away.
Another child was also transported to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment, along with a firefighter.
Great job by all!
