Tragic day at the Lake.
What should have been a cool relaxing day at the lake took a turned tragic when a swimmer dove into the water and did not surface.
Crews from Wimlington Fire along with mutual aid from North Reading and Tewksbury fire raced to the scene.
Into the water went the boats and the search began. After several long minutes crews reported back to command on shore they have located the swimmer but where having difficulties getting he back to the surface because of the depth of the water and being caught up in weeds on the bottom.
Using the assistance of a Good Samaritan's boat, rescue crews where swapped out regularly from shore to the swimmers location.
Crews also stage personal on a nearby floating dock.
After several long minute of extricating the swimmer from the depths of the lake crews raced him to shore preforming CPR. Once on shore crews which where standing by jumped in and took over getting the swimmer onto an awaiting gurney and raced him into the back of an ambulance continuing with the chest compression. He was raced off to Winchester Hospital where he was tragically pronounced dead.
A member of Wilmington Fire Department was also taken to an area hospital as a precaution and released later that night.
At one point during the rescue operation Boston MedFlight was requested but was cancelled.
Members from the Mass. State Police Dive team was requested, responded; however; never made the water because the swimmer was removed while they where gearing up on shore.
Crews gave it their all on this one; it was one which could of easily drained crews physically and emotionally; great job by all!
